Restoration of the Society of Jesus
On Aug. 7, 1814, Pope Pius VII issued the bull, Sollicitudo omnium Ecclesiarum, which re-established the Society of Jesus in the universal Church after it was suppressed by papal brief for 41 years.
Father General Adolfo Nicolás has emphasized that the anniversary is a time for prayer, and today as Jesuits and their lay colleagues conclude a nine-day novena commemorating the restoration, we offer below a brief (8:00) meditation on the events and major players leading up to the suppression and ultimately to the restoration. Less a "Ken Burns"-type documentary, the video is meant to inspire feelings of awe, humility and gratitude.
